2. Guidelines for Submitting a Book Review
Reviews of books related to the teaching or curriculum fields are welcomed from any and all AATC members and non-members. Submissions should range between 750-1,000 words and must be received via the Google Submission Portal by January 15.
Characteristics of a Good Book Review:
- The book review should situate the book within the field and consider its relevance to members of AATC.
- The review introduces the readership to the book’s content and focus, how the author approaches the topic, the logic of the argument, the readability of the author’s writing, and describes how the book relates and contributes to what is happening in the academic discipline. The review is not a summary of the book.
- Criticality is important to educational research. In discussing merits and potential shortcomings of the text, situate critiques within the literature and cite evidence in the text. Reviews should be fair to the author and should include an evaluation of the book’s content, merits, and its contribution to the subject along with discussions of shortcomings.
- Reviewers may draw comparisons with earlier or similar books to establish the book’s place in existing literature. Reviewers should NOT describe what the author(s) should have written.
- Strive to make your review informative, insightful, and readable. Be specific, give details, and include particularly relevant direct quotations or notable facts or findings that would entice readers of the review to read the entire book.

3. Guidelines for Submitting an Outtake Article
Research outtakes provide researchers with an opportunity to share unusual situations, surprises, and unexpected challenges that they have encountered in conducting research but which may be out of place in a standard research article. Submissions should range between 1,000-1,500 words and must be received via the Google Submission Portal by January 15 to be reviewed and considered for publication.
Characteristics of Research Outtakes Manuscripts:
- The focus and bulk of an outtake manuscript must be the unusual situation, surprise, or unexpected challenge you have encountered when conducting research, its effect on your project, and (possibly) how it was resolved.
- Avoid overly technical vocabulary and citations and strive to make your review informative, insightful, and readable.
- Be concise and specific.
- Think of your outtake manuscript as a very short play:
-
- General introduction (What was your research project?)
- Specific introduction (Who or what in your project was expected to happen that relates directly to the outtake?)
- Outtake incident (What happened?)
- Impact (How did the incident affect the study?)
- Resolution (Was the outtake resolved? If so, how?)
- Reflection (Did the outtake lead to any “ah ha!” moments or changes in how you proceeded with the study?)
Document Guidelines:
- 1000-1500 words.
- 12 point font, double-spaced, one-inch margins.
- Entire document (including references) in APA format.
